The 2026 school year is coming to an end, which means now is a great time reflect on the 2026 season. We will begin our review with the Federal Division of the Hillsborough County Public Schools Western Conference. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY GIRLS BASKETBALL

2026 TEAM‑BY‑TEAM YEAR IN REVIEW


RIVERVIEW SHARKS

Record: 7–15

Top Players:

Mikaylah Birch (Jr) 8.9 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 0.9 APG, 2.6 SPG

Aaliyah Souffront (Sr) 6.9 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 1.1 APG, 2.2 SPG

Paislee Thomas (Fr) 4.2 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 0.3 APG, 1.5 SPG

The Riverview Sharks, led by Coach Cameron Johnson, finished the season with a 7–15 record. The Sharks matched their win total from the previous year and established a foundation for the future, highlighted by the emergence of Mikaylah Birch and Paislee Thomas.


MORGAN MUSTANGS

Record: 6–12 (1st Varsity Season in School History) No Seniors

Under Head Coach Maurice Ringo, the Morgan Mustangs finished their inaugural varsity season with a 6–12 record. As the newest public high school in Hillsborough County, the Mustangs competed without a single senior on the roster. The team played hard throughout the year and identified three key building blocks for their future in 2nd Team Federal Division selection Myah Linde, Tyliah Agnew, and Kimora Booker.


SUMNER STINGRAYS

Record: 20–8 (District Champions, Hillsborough County Final Four, FHSAA Elite 8 Class 7A) Top Players:

Mariah Farmer (Sr) 13.4 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 2.7 APG, 2.1 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Jada Mathurin (Jr) 10.6 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 0.4 APG, 0.9 SPG, 1.1 BPG

Kendal Curtis (Fr) 7.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 1.3 APG, 2.9 SPG, 0.4 BPG

The Sumner Stingrays have existed for only six years, all under the tutelage of Markia Starks, the 2025-2026 Federal Division Coach of the Year. Coach Starks has secured two District Championships and two 20-win seasons over the past three years. Led by 1st Team Federal Selection Mariah Farmer, 2nd Team Federal Selection Camryn Jeter, and defensive specialist London Arthur, the Stingrays made school history by advancing to the Class 7A Elite 8. The Stingrays look to solidify their status as a top program in Hillsborough County next season with the return of Kendal Curtis and Jada Mathurin.


DURANT COUGARS

Record: 16–8 (Playoff Appearance Class 7A)

Kassie Longanecker (So) 15.9 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 2.8 APG, 5.5 SPG, 0.4 BPG

Icyss Lopez (Sr) 9.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 2.9 APG, 3.1 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Emily Blair (Sr) 8.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 1.1 APG, 2.2 SPG, 0.1 BPG

In their twelve seasons leading the Durant Cougars, Coach Constance/Al Mitchell has averaged twelve wins per season. Since 2020, the duo has elevated the program further, increasing that average to sixteen wins per season with three playoff appearances in six years and a 20-win season in 2021-2022. In 2026, the Cougars reached the district championship and the first round of the 7A playoffs before falling to the eventual state champions. The Cougars return Kassie Longanecker, a 1st Team Federal Division selection and one of the county’s premier players, but they must replace 2nd Team Federal Division selection Icyss Lopez.


EAST BAY INDIANS

Record: 14–11 (Playoff Appearance Class 5A)

Top Players:

Lyric Green (Fr) 13.7 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 0.6 APG, 1.6 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Lhondyn Green (Fr) 8.5 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 1.0 APG, 1.5 SPG

Coach Kaela Crowell, in her third year leading the East Bay Indians, has captured her second playoff appearance. Following a historic previous season where the team set a school record with 23 wins, the Indians returned to the Class 5A Playoffs this year. The team was led by Za’myria King, a 1st Team Federal Division selection, Hillsborough County East v West Senior All Star Game MVP, and Hillsborough v Pinellas All Star. With 2nd Team Federal Division selection Lyric Green and Lhondyn Green returning next season, East Bay has established itself as a winning program to watch.


BLOOMINGDALE BULLS

Record: 25–3 (5x Consecutive District Champions, 3x Consecutive Hillsborough County Champions, Class 6A Elite 8)

Top Players:

Kniya Godfrey (So) 18.3 PPG, 31.3 RPG, 13.5 APG, 18.1 SPG, 3.8 BPG

Aviance Torres (Sr) 10.8 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.3 APG, 2.0 SPG, 2.0 BPG

Kateline Peña (Jr) 10.0 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 4.2 APG, 3.4 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Under the leadership of Joel Bower, the Bloomingdale Bulls followed their 2025 state championship with an Elite 8 finish in 2026. In his 14th season, Coach Bower ensured the Bulls remained Hillsborough’s best; since 2021, the team is 83-5 against county opponents. Despite a largely new roster, the Bulls earned 25 wins and their third consecutive regional final appearance. The team must now replace 1st Team Federal Division selection and Hillsborough County East/West Senior All Star/Hillsborough v Pinellas Senior All Star Maria Fedoseeva, as well as Aviance Torres, also a Hillsborough County East/West All Senior All Star and Hillsborough v Pinellas Senior All Star. For the 2027 season, the Bulls look to return to the State Final Four led by 2nd Team Federal Division selection Kniya Godfrey.


NEWSOME WOLVES

Record: 15–10

Top Players:

Avery Sanchez (So) 24.0 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 6.0 APG, 3.0 SPG, 1.0 BPG

Kylie Eckhardt (So) 18.0 PPG, 9.0 RPG, 3.0 APG, 2.0 SPG

Mia Dolan (So) 5.0 PPG, 0 RPG, 1.0 APG, 1.0 SPG

In their second season under Coach David Cassreino, the Newsome Wolves took another step forward with a strong 15–10 record. The Wolves are one of the younger teams in the county, featuring only one senior on the 2025-2026 roster. After improving from 12 wins in Coach Cassreino‘s first year to 15 this year, the team aims to build on this progress with the return of 1st Team Federal Division selection Avery Sanchez and Mia Dolan.


PLANT CITY RAIDERS

Record: 7–14

Top Players:

Alyssa Valerio (Jr) 8.5 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 3.6 APG, 3.4 SPG, 0.4 BPG

Jaiden Lewis (So) 8.4 PPG, 10.9 RPG, 0.2 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Jahni Shaw (So) 6.1 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 1.1 APG, 2.4 SPG

The Plant City Raiders, in their third season under Head Coach Joni Jarrett, finished 7–14. The season was hampered by injuries to key players Chyanne Gines and Ja’nelle Graham, yet the Raiders showed great grit, losing six of their final seven games by only single digits. With only two players graduating, Coach Jarrett will return a roster full of experience and talent for the 2027 season.


LENNARD LONGHORNS

Record: 11–9

Top Players:

Kaya Bonner‑Rivera (So) 6.9 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.1 APG, 3.8 SPG, 0.6 BPG

Genevieve Jorden (So) 5.0 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 1.2 APG, 3.1 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Mia Wohlgamuth (Fr) 6.4 PPG, 0.8 RPG, 0.9 APG, 1.8 SPG, 0.3 BPG

In year two under Coach J.W. Butler, the Lennard Longhorns finished 11–9, marking their first winning season since 2022. Coach Butler led the program to a four-win improvement over the previous year. The Longhorns ended the season on a high note, winning six of their final eight games before a one-point overtime loss in the district tournament. The team expects to return its three leading scorers: Kaya Bonner-Rivera, Genevieve Jorden, and Mia Wohlgamuth.


BRANDON EAGLES

Record: 1–17

Top Players:

Harmonie Charles (So) 7.0 PPG, 1.5 APG, 3.0 SPG

Elisha Williams (Jr) 4.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 2.0 APG, 4.0 SPG, 1.0 BPG

Jazleni Mathews (Sr) 4.0 PPG, 0.5 APG, 3.5 SPG, 3.0 BPG

Year one under Coach Cami Wolthuis represented a new beginning for the Brandon Eagles. Despite struggling with roster numbers in recent years, Coach Wolthuis fielded a team that competed through the entire season without a single forfeit. The Eagles will continue their rebuilding efforts next year, with leading scorer Harmonie Charles expected to return.

SPOTO SPARTANS

Record: 2–18

Top Players:

Coach Asia Royster in her final year as the Head Coach of the Spoto Spartans led the team to a 2-18 record. Coach Royster won a district championship at Spoto in her 2nd season as the Head Coach when she won the second most games in school history 18. Following that season, Coach Royster lost her two best players and the program has been trying to recover since. The Spartans young talent fought hard the entire season and were able to improve their record from the previous season by earning two wins.  The next coach of Spoto will have the teams leading scorer Aaliyah Bennett expected to return.
